Title: Must-see movies list
Post by: contingencyplan on April 15, 2008, 12:11:25 pm
From talking with Cae, it's apparent that there's a TON of movies that I need to see. So I started a google docs spreadsheet, available here (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pRJrtNb5C4Pp7S9EF7-FPHQ). Feel free to post movies in this thread, and we'll add them to the list.

Hmm, I can't seem to edit it. Can you add [email protected]?

Right now, only Cae, morgul, and myself can edit it - just post here and we'll stick your suggestions in.

A ton of movies?  I only see two. :colbert:
Have you seen any of these?
Groundhog Day
Training Day
Rebecca
Rear Window
African Queen
The Graduate
Dirty Harry
The French Connection

I haven't had a chance to add them to the list yet.

And yeah, those you listed are GREAT.

-Pitch Black
-Chronicles of Riddick.

If you don't like the first, still watch the second. They're basically completely different movies.

-Serenity
-Patton
-Boondock Saints

Those are just off the top of my head.

And if you like the second, but not the first, you deserve a half brick to the skull.

Also, Boondock Saints RULES.

They all rule.

Patton most of all though, but that's just because I have a fascination with the man.

Harry Potter 3 and Star Wars Episode 1, bitches.

The two movies that might rival my all time favorite: Legally Blond 2.

...though Sixteen Candles rocked too...

As much as I don't get along with you sometimes... Just because you like Boondock Saints I might offer to bare your children.

But *cough* back to what I came here to say...

SLC Punk
Trainspotting
Cloverfield
Vampire Clan
Ginger Snaps
King of California

There's this one movie... I forgot what it's called but I'll look it up in a bit. Basically this guy has a disassociative mental disorder. He ends up dating this blow-up doll, and he has to cope with every day normal life with this "real-doll" girlfriend.

Lost Boys, I could forgive, but Ginger Snaps?!

Also, Trainspotting is really cool.

-Ball of Fire (more black and white goodness)
-The 10th Kingdom (actually a mini-series)
-Reservoir Dogs
-The Producers (the original)
-The Illusionist
-Sin City
-Unbreakable
-A Beautiful Mind
-Spirited Away

Those are just the ones to come to mind...

Wow, I completely forgot about this movie. Well, I haven't thought about it much, but one movie comes to mind:

Chinatown.

It's a surprisingly good movie.

Don't even ask.

Those are all excellent.

Hard Candy messes with the head.

And Chinatown is a BEAUTIFULLY done example of film noir.  Excellent suggestion.

Not trying to be mean.  Everyone DOES have their right to their opinion, and I'm glad you enjoy those.

I just personally strongly dislike (read: would rather have shards of glass in my eyes than watch) quite a few of those movies and the subset of film that they represent.

I personally agree.

Although - I'm obliged to like Adam Sandler... but that's because he's Jewish.

I'm not a fan of retarded "funny" stuff, which is why I used to not like Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler. However, Eternal Sunshine (and The Truman Show) changed my mind about the former, and Reign over Me for the latter.

Both actors are good when they aren't cast in their stereotypical stupid "LAUGH BECAUSE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY LOLO" roles.

PS Why don't we have the :downs: emoticons? I only see :saddowns:

Here's another fun one:

Pi

I love that one...there's always more digits to memorize!

So far all I can remember is 3.1415926535897931

Wrong!  That dies after 2 decimal places.

Someone may have already suggested this one, but I don't feel like looking it up. The Departed is one that I really enjoyed. It confuses you at the beginning and makes you say "Do I not get it or is it just boring?" But about half way through, it all makes since and is an awesome movie. However, let it be known, this movie has more cussing than these forums. (Yes, it's surprisingly possible.)

Yes, this was a very good movie, even when you consider it had Leonardo DiCaprio in it.  The Ending, awesome.

EDIT:  Wind, you have been around these Texan's so long.  "Ain't" isn't a word bro.
Neither is "fave".

Wind, you're my fave internet buddy, you're just awesome.

Ain't is not a colloquialism, a colloquialism is a speech pattern distinct to a particular geographic region.

Ain't is the contraction of a contraction.  It's sloppy at best, but is now (sadly) recognized as a word.

Are you intentionally going through and trying to find SAT words or did you specifically memorize that one so you could find a use for it at some time to look smart?

Shaun of the Dead, while not necessarily a fantastic script/story/whatever, was by far the most intelligent parody I have ever seen and I hold in very high esteem for showing people like Mel Brooks that you don't have to be dirty or stupid to be funny and make fun of something (Mel only does that half the time - the writers of Scary Movie need to be drug out of bed, flayed, thrown into a pit of lye, and then shit upon).

Juno is at the top of my must see's. For an indie film, it was genuinely creative and sweet.

Dracula, Three Kinds and The Brothers Grimm are amazing movies.

I watch The Brothers Grimm like... three times today.

What Dracula? Is it the one based on Bram Stoker's novel?

If you guys want probably the best "list" of top movies, its the Sight and Sound polls that they do every 10 years (the interview a large number of critics and a large number of directors, whose individual top 10 lists are compiled).  I have seen quite a few of these lists, but by and large Sight and Sound's polls are considered far and away the best.

Here are the most current versions:

http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/topten/

One of the nice things is you can see who voted for each film, and which films those people voted for.  Some of the people annotated their list to say why they picked each film.

There is also a smaller poll of only UK critics regarding the best films of the last 25 years (done in 2002).  Its a little more suspect (I doubt Yi Yi or Distant Voices, Still Lives will be on the list in ten years), but cool nonetheless:

Yeah, that's fine if you like it, but I totally disagree on that one.
