Title: Catch me up fast.
Post by: gh0stmkr on September 30, 2006, 01:25:09 pm
Okay first off. I was invited to these forums by a friend on here known as Caenus. I am in my third year of CS at Texas Tech and have a decent amount of programming experience as far as the c / c++ languages, however I lack practical experience as can be found in a project such as yours. I'm decent in photoshop and have done several simple websites for various people.

Anyway thats my intro, but what I really want to know is what you guys wish to accomplish with this game. It looks to be a blend of rpg/scifi elements into something that will be perhaps an MMORPG. I'm not exactly sure. I just was wondering if one of you guys could give me a low down on what exactly you wish to create so I can see where you are coming from and hopefully add another perspective or help out.

If you were going to sell me your idea, what do i need to know? And why would I want to play it?

Thanks
~Warren~

Well, I will be the one to sell you, but not right now. (Just back back from flying for 6 hours, and I'm DEAD.) So, I will try to work with Cae to arrange a time I can 'sell you on it'. (Unless you would rather I sold you on the forums, instead of in private.)

If possible, I'd like to be in on this meeting too, if for no other reasons than to help sell the idea and to get to know gh0stmkr. That sound cool?

Works for me.

Gah, Now I'm thinking about bug tracking. Jeeze, I'm going to bed before I make myself realize how much of a geek I really am. :-p

Well, I've made a decision. I'm gunna do the catching up on the forums. Makes the most sense to me to make this public. However, I have a girlfirn ed who needs tending too right now, so I'll have to post my answers to your questions later. Keep checking back.

No . . . too telling.  This means that your girlfriend is a bottle of lotion and 87 gigs of porn.

Either that, or simply put, a computer.

My girlfriend knows html... and sadly that probably tops all my knowledge of computer languages.

Which Mac Hall strip is that? I tried to find it a while back, and couldn't.

Well, it's now time to sell you on this. Sorry it's taken me so long.. bad week.

[...]Anyway thats my intro, but what I really want to know is what you guys wish to accomplish with this game.[...]

Well, our goals are simple to state. We would like to creat an interactive medium through which anyone can experience the dynamic universe I've/We've been creating for years now.

[...]It looks to be a blend of rpg/scifi elements into something that will be perhaps an MMORPG. I'm not exactly sure.[...]

Yes, the goal is basically an MMORPG where there is no distinction between players and NPC's. This isn't a normal MMORPG, as we'll be discouraging knowing who's a PC and who's an NPC and we won't be providing a list of in game stats for characters. It's all hidden from the user.

[...]I just was wondering if one of you guys could give me a low down on what exactly you wish to create so I can see where you are coming from and hopefully add another perspective or help out.[...]

Well, as I've said, we want an immersive game that is basically just a window into a universe. Now, this is an dynamic experience, not anything static. Just because 'canon' lore is that X happened on date y doesn't mean that the player's can't change that, and prevent X all together... or what have you. We would like the Universe to be a stage, and the players will create their own stories as they play, making the universe that much more dynamic. Or so the hope is.

[...]If you were going to sell me your idea, what do i need to know? And why would I want to play it?

Well, what you need to know is some of the universe. I actually won't take the time here to explain it all; I would like you to look at the site, learn what you can, and if you're willing, help me get the important information into a format that new people can look at, find, and understand easily.

As far as why do you want to play it? Well, simply put, it's never going to be the same every time you play, and we're hoping to make it such a rich dynamic universe, you're going to want to play, just to find out what happens to your character. Actually, that's not true... your reason for playing is going to be personal. You're going to have a vested interest in your character, and in what happens to him... and it will be your job to make that come true. Something I've not mentioned is the fact that characters are continuous... that is to say they don't go poof when you log off. They are always in the universe. Oh, and death is pretty permanant... so you'll want to log back on just to make sure your character isn't dead. (We'll be working on creating safe places you cna leave them, or allowing basic instructions to be given to your player who's now under AI control.

The long and short is this: Imagine playing a game that is as close to StarTrek's holodeck as we can come. Imagine forgetting you're not really a Terran general about to invade the capital of Chronos Phi. That's why you'll play.
