Also, how many servers are you thinking of having?
-
...and will they be assigned to areas of the country like: US East, US West, US Midwest, US Mideast, etc.?
-
Shards or servers?
(Not that I can answer this question, but I think this is a valid question).
For reference I heard somewhere that a single shard of UO has around 10 servers.
-
It all depends on the hardware. However, we're going to have one location for our servers, and then seperate them into nodes which contain an area of the universe in game.
-
Ah, ok. Yea...unfortunately, I don't know the difference between shards and servers...that's one of the areas I don't know too much about : P
-
By shard what I mean is somethign akin to a "logical" server. Basically the world that the players play in. For instance, World of Warcraft has well over 100 shards (which people sometimes also call servers, hence the confusion), whereas Eve Online is a single shard. In Eve Online all the players of the game play in the same virtual world. Each shard is often made up of seperate nodes, which are then made up of several physical servers.
-
Ok I understand now. I think I meant shards then.
-
No, there will be one shard. However there would be multiple nodes.
-
Ok, sounds good, so this will mean that all the players will be playing in the same univese...like on eve, right?
-
Yup. We'll have it split up, though, to where different people in different areas of the universe will be on different servers. But there's only one shard - only one instance of the in-game universe.
-
Ok, I think I get it now.
