Title: An artist we may be interested in
Post by: contingencyplan on July 02, 2006, 05:45:47 am

Came across this guy randomly a few minutes ago. Looking for good wallpapers, saw this (http://www.deviantart.com/view/35446623/) page, and wanted to get the wallpaper. Check out his stuff - I think this is someone we'd definitely want to contact about doing Precursors art.

What do y'all think?

Edit: Found the wallpaper: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/34971751/
Edit2: Notice when he submitted that - June 18 of this year. He's a current artist.

All in all - 16 years old, already DAMN good. Skilled in "Photoshop 7.0, 3D Studio Max, Cinema 4D", so he could (presumably) do some modelling + concept art work for us. I'd say let's talk about him doing some volunteer work for us for now. We won't be ready to begin particularly employing anybody till he's 18 anyways, so child labor won't be a problem then.

Yeah, definitely.  The big problem is, for artwork like that, we'd probably have to contract with him, or else pay him up front.  It's up to morgul, but I love his style, and I'd love to see about having him possibly do some stuff for us.

Well, it depends on what he wants. I'm not worried though; sometimes artists liek that just want to be known. We'll see.

And it's not like it's completely volunteer - we're working on the game in the hopes that we can finish it, sell it, and get moneys. For right now, it's volunteer, but it's not completely altruistic volunteerism.

If nothing else, though, the being known part is a good incentive - if he can put us on a resume and say "hey, didn't finish the game with them, but I did these artworks for it", then everybody still wins.

I hope he sees it that way, as I've just sent him an e-mail. I also want to send an e-mail to the authors of these webcomics:

and

http://www.applegeeks.com/

Whatcha guys think? Would they be worth getting onboard?

Apple Geeks is popular enough that they may be busy enough to be unable to do a job that doesn't pay upfront.

The reservation I have about hiring people who are currently involved in the webcomic industry is that we have nothing to offer them upfront.  Sure they MAY be willing to offer volunteer work, but more than likely, we are setting ourselves up for frustration.  I like Cplan's idea of recruiting art students.  I've got one who might be up for it.

Also, Cplan, I'm not saying we'd ask the guy to completely volunteer, but I'm saying that a lot of people require incentive UP FRONT.  especially artists.  I work with Purplehoodie, remember?  And you can ask Morgul, he requires half up front.
