General Discussion / Re: Who smited me?
« on: November 26, 2005, 02:05:45 am »
How do you get possitive and negative karma? And what is it in this forum?

A definition of Karma, as always, can be found here. Yet another article I can read sometime, after this stupid semester is over.

As far as its bearing on the forums, it's somewhat a way of rewarding / reprimanding users for their behaviour, or something like that. If a user is an asshat, they get smited (negative Karma); if they're a saint, they get applauded (positive Karma).

However, for now, it doesn't really do anything besides give people an "applaud" / "smite" option under people's names. Neo is upset that people are smiting him; I'm concerned for the general wellbeing of the forum that people just get smited or applauded for no apparent reason. I'm hoping we can set up something to log the smites / applauds and require users to give a reason for applauding / smiting. However, until we figure that out, the Karma system has no real meaning - we aren't basing any decisions off of it.

As of yet noone has answered my question... Neo is pissed (as is the norm the past 5 days)

Quote
Well, for right now, the karma thing is BS - until we figure out what, if anything, we're going to do with it, nobody will be paying any attention to it.

Then why does it matter if I change it?

~Neo

Well, I'm sorry that you're pissed, but I can't really do anything about that.

As far as someone answering your question (presumed to be "Who smited me and why?"), I wouldn't hold my breath. I've only applauded 2 people that I know of, and smited no one, not even you ;). Since there's currently no accountability, then people have no problem smiting or rewarding. I wouldn't worry about it at all, since nothing's being based on it at the current time.

But if you're worried about the image it presents and you want to change your karma, go ahead. It's just when I saw "+999" for your karma, I immediately thought "Oh shit, we're being hacked," especially after seeing the thread on the GoRC forums about it.

Just realize we'll eventually figure out what, if anything, we want to do with this. At that point, we'll reset everybody (since no one's Karma till that point has any bearing, why should we keep it?). Then, changing your Karma will be frowned upon. But till then, go right ahead.

Perhaps we should disable it until we figure something out?

Heh - apologies Neo for hijacking your thread... I'll see if I can split it here in a sec.

It is, but I don't think it should be entirely anonymous. At least to the admins and mods, we should be able to see who's been smiting whom (and why, if we [also?] use the system requiring a reason for smiting / applauding a person. Having some accountability for your applauding / smiting will cut down on abuse significantly and allow us to spot abuse much more easily.

Also, like I said in General Discussion, the fact that Neo has +999 / -0 concerns me greatly - tells me someone is hacking our forums, because no one is going to sit there and click Applaud 999 times. (Or if someone does, then they should be whopped upside the head and told to get a fscking life.)

I wouldn't say remove the feature - it could prove very useful. See my post in the Bug reports about this.

Though I'm very concerned - I'm showing Neo with +999. This tells me someone is hacking - no one has the patience to click Applaud 999 times.

We also need to fix this Karma system. Caenus has +7 / -7 - how did that happen? Someone on the boards is going trigger-happy with the system, and I don't like it.

I think we should look at one of the mods for the Karma system - I think they have a logging system and a system to put in reasons for applauding or smiting a user. Both these should cut down on the abuse I already see happening.

No, the abuse isn't bad, so don't think I'm greatly alarmed. However, I do think that something needs to be done before it gets out of hand. Knowing the idiots that sometimes play on CS and thus may be attracted to the site, that abuse is coming, methinks.

Alternately, we may just have it as a system for the mods to reward or reprimand users - make it unavailable to others. If they see a bad post, they can report it, and let the mod smite the offender.

Which idea would work better, do y'all think?

Yeah, I remember reading on the internet that some guys who make it their purpose to hack WoW were going to exploit it.

Hopefully we won't be dealing with stupid shit like this when we release Precursors...

But something tells me that this kind of stuff is only going to get worse.

Well, for starters, that depends on the artists we get - for instance, through this competition. ;)

Further, the graphics aren't an absolutely necessary component to keep interest - game play will keep the interest going. Granted, if they look like shit, then people will grow frustrated, but we don't have to get only 20 FPS on the next-gen graphics card. The graphics may attract some to the game initially, but regardless of the graphics, the game play will keep them coming back.

That said, I'm all for kick-ass graphics - if you know of any artists, then let us know!

It has 100Mbit. But, it doesn't work worth shit, so it drops about 60% of the packets.

Aside 1: Thought we did have 100 Mbit at the Sovereign?

Aside 2: My roommate had to code a networking project for Systems - the prof had them drop packets on purpose to simulate packet loss. Fun.

I wish I had time to really relax this break.

edit: I can't spell "sovereign"...

Very nice - a HUD based on that would look very cool.

I notice this is the third person we've had submit anything - not that what we've gotten so far isn't cool, but aren't we going for more people? Have you heard of any other submissions from people?

Apologies to Cosmo for teh hijacking of his demonstration of coolness thread...  ;)

That's a picture from Starcraft - those are the Terran Wraiths and a Battlecruiser, iirc.

Don't forget the Valkarie, it's in the middle-to-lower left of the battle cruser.
Newb. lol
I was guessing that one day precursors would look somthing more like that. seeing as how morgul couldn't get me the screen shots without the HUDs that you have now, I had to improvise.

~Neo

Ah yes, the Valkyrie... My bad.

Not bad improvisation, I might add.

Though I agree - it would kick all SORTS of ass if that was from Precursors. Means we'd have more done than we actually do.

And this just in - Texas is gonna sue Sony. This is one reason why I like Texas - we go after jerks like this.

Well, rootkits are actually quite common on UNIX-style systems - they are a major way of compromising security on them. I don't know enough about it, but think about it - "root"-kit is something that lets you gain root-level access to the system. Such a term originated with UNIX systems, where the root user is the god of the system. It doesn't require hacking the kernel - most of the time, it's just a program that's stuck on there that intercepts stuff in transit. Or something - I'm probably just talking out of my ass here.

As far as Apple, I'm glad that Steve Jobs called the RIAA and the recording industry on the prospect of raising the prices for songs. He said it right: they're just plain greedy. I would have thrown a couple choicer words in there myself, but maybe that's just me. But the music industry is wanting to get a cut of the iPod thing too. Go greed.

*mutters under breath*

I don't know if y'all have heard about this, but recently Sony has come under fire for distributing software with their music CDs that requires you to install the software before you can play the CD on your computer. The software was found to contain a rootkit - essentially a piece of software that attempts to mask itself from the user on the operating-system level (i.e., not something you can find by selecting "Show Hidden Files"). I won't take time to rehash the story here - you can find it on numerous places, such as Wikipedia (they have a whole fricking article about it - I love Wikipedia) and Ars Technica.

The latest news is that Sony is now trying to undo the damage by recalling all the CDs that include the software. All I can say is it's about fricking time - they never should have done it to begin with.

The problem is that the music industry is now trying to stop people from ripping their CDs to their computers. I don't know about y'all, but that just screams "fair use violation" at me... What do y'all think?

edit: And apparently, you can circumvent the whole process with tape. Go figure.

So how many submissions have we gotten? Since time's running out, I hope it's quite a few - if not, then we may need to extend the cutoff date.

If there's one thing I suck at worse than computer games, it's FPS games using a pad - FPSes were made for a keyboard and a mouse. I can't play it any other way.

Mouselook pwns all.

You have some fried chicken. And it's good fried chicken. Until later that evening, when you're feeling like shit because it had food poisoning all over it because the stupid store screwed up when they were making it.

I wish AIM-speek would just plain fricking die. (My brother just typed "and when I axed so-and-so..." - UGGGH!!! Learn to use the English language, and type like you have higher than a kindergarten education!!!!)
