Umm, so since blender can convert to crystalspace format, would it be ok to convert my .max files to blender, then use blender to change them to the appropriate format  (since I completely dislike blender's interface)?  Or is there a catch with that...?

There is a catch. Materials in 3DS might not transfer over correctly. Actually, anything other than a UV material won't transfer to CS. It's how CS works; everything is done with UV Mapping. (That's pretty standard in games, honesly). I don't know how well the transfer process would work... do it, send me the blender file, and I'll convert it to CS, and see how it looks.

hmm...one problem though...i have no idea how to work with blender...i just cant seem to master its interface

..would things made in 3ds max work if they have a UVW map, or is it only UV?
